What is black tea and where does it come from?

Black tea is a fully oxidized tea made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. Our black teas come mainly from the prestigious Assam gardens in India, a region at the foothills of the Himalayas known for producing the world’s boldest black teas. This area boasts a humid tropical climate and rich soil, giving Assam tea its deep copper color and distinctive malty flavors.

How is Assam black tea grown and processed?

The cultivation of Assam black tea takes place at altitudes between 500 and 1,200 meters, in plantations where tea trees can grow over 15 meters tall. After hand-picking the top two leaves and the bud, the leaves undergo a full oxidation process: withering, rolling, oxidizing, and drying. This process develops the dark color and powerful tannins that define black tea, giving it its strength and aromatic depth.

What are the main health benefits of black tea?

Black tea is packed with natural benefits: it contains theine (the equivalent of caffeine), which provides a natural energy boost and improves focus. Rich in antioxidants (theaflavins and thearubigins), it helps fight cell aging. Black tea also supports digestion and may contribute to cardiovascular health. Its flavonoid content makes it a valuable ally for strengthening the body’s natural defenses.

How do you properly brew black tea to bring out all its flavors?

Black tea preparation requires hot water at 95-100°C and steeping for 3 to 5 minutes, depending on your preferred strength. Use about 2 to 3 grams of tea per cup (150ml). Black tea handles longer infusions well and gradually reveals its malty notes. For our flavored blends, follow the steeping times to balance the tea's flavors with the added natural ingredients.

What is the difference between black tea and other types of tea?

Black tea stands out for its full oxidation (unlike green tea, which isn’t oxidized, or white tea, which is only lightly oxidized). This process gives it its dark color, robust flavors, and high caffeine content. While green tea offers fresh, vegetal notes, black tea develops malty, woody, and sometimes fruity flavors. Its strong flavor profile makes it an excellent base for flavored blends.

Can you drink black tea at any time of the day?

Black tea contains caffeine (30 to 50mg per cup), making it an ideal energizing drink for mornings and afternoons. It’s not recommended in the evening to avoid sleep disturbances. Thanks to its moderate caffeine content compared to coffee, black tea offers a gradual energy boost without the spikes and crashes. It can be a great alternative to coffee for more lasting energy.

How do you recognize a quality black tea at Pure Tea?

An exceptional black tea is recognized by its whole, well-shaped leaves, its clear liquor with copper highlights, and its rich aroma free from dusty notes. At Pure Tea, we exclusively select Premium Assam black teas from renowned gardens. Our criteria: harvest freshness, controlled oxidation process, and harmonious blends with authentic organic ingredients. A good black tea should reveal its aromas as soon as it steeps, offering a balanced tasting experience between strength and finesse.

How should you store black tea to preserve its flavor?

Black tea storage requires a dry, cool, light-free environment, ideally between 59°F and 68°F (15–20°C). Avoid heat and humidity, which can damage the essential oils. At Pure Tea, our recyclable metallized film packaging creates an optimal barrier against light, moisture, and external odors. Once opened, reseal the bag carefully after each use. Properly stored black tea retains its flavor for 2 to 3 years, with our eco-friendly packaging ensuring maximum freshness.
