You deserve better than a coffee that keeps you up at night
Barley coffee is a hot (or cold) drink made from malted barley grains, roasted and then ground, prepared just like traditional coffee. Unlike classic coffee, which comes from a tropical fruit (the coffee bean), barley coffee is made from a cereal grown locally in France. It naturally contains no caffeine, making it an ideal alternative for anyone looking to reduce their intake of stimulants while still enjoying the pleasure of an intense, hot, aromatic drink. Its taste stands out with notes of hazelnut, caramel and toasted cereals, along with a gentle bitterness reminiscent of espresso.
Caffeine-free coffee is coffee from which the caffeine has been removed using a chemical process or with water, which often affects the taste and leaves traces of residual caffeine. Orge Noir is naturally caffeine-free from the very start, with no chemical treatment. It’s a single-ingredient beverage made from 100% natural roasted barley, offering a rich and complex flavor profile (hazelnut, caramel, toasted bread) and nutritional benefits that caffeine-free coffee doesn’t provide: soluble fibers, minerals, antioxidants. What’s more, it’s gentler on the stomach, making it a more comfortable choice for people who are prone to reflux or heartburn.
The barley used in Orge Noir is grown in the Tarn, in Occitania. The entire production chain (growing, malting, roasting and packaging) takes place locally, ensuring complete traceability from the field to your cup. The barley is 100% natural, and the roasting is done artisanally to fully bring out the malt’s aromas. What’s more, this barley coffee won the “Coup de Cœur Occitanie” award at the RHD 2024 Show.
No special equipment is needed. Café Orge Noir’s grinding has been specially calibrated to work with all coffee makers: filter coffee maker, French Press, Italian coffee maker (Moka), or simply steeping in a filter or tea infuser. The recommended dosage is 2 level tablespoons per cup, with boiling water (100°C). For the French Press, let it steep for 4 to 5 minutes. For the Italian coffee maker, do not press the grounds down and leave a little extra space, as the barley will expand slightly. You can also make it into a latte with frothed milk or enjoy a refreshing iced version for summer.
With a recommended dosage of 2 level tablespoons per cup (about 8 to 10 g), a 250 g bag lets you make around 25 to 30 cups of barley coffee. That’s the equivalent of a good month of daily rituals. You can adjust the dosage to suit your preferences: use less for a lighter taste, or add more for a more pronounced intensity. For a latte, go for a double portion (4 level tablespoons) so that the barley aromas stay beautifully present once blended with milk.
Café Orge Noir is perfectly suited for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and children. Naturally caffeine-free, without theobromine and without any stimulant, it can be enjoyed with complete peace of mind at any time of day. Its richness in minerals (iron, magnesium, potassium) and B-group vitamins makes it a particularly interesting nutritional supplement during pregnancy. Children especially love its gentle, malty taste—naturally sweet, with no added sugar. As with any new food, it’s recommended to start with small quantities. Important note : barley contains gluten, so it is not suitable for people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance.
Barley coffee has an impressive nutritional profile. It is naturally rich in soluble fiber, especially beta-glucans, known for helping to reduce cholesterol and support blood sugar regulation. It also contains essential minerals (iron, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, potassium, selenium), B2, B3 and E vitamins, as well as powerful antioxidants from the roasting process (phenolic compounds, melanoidins). With less acidity than traditional coffee, it helps preserve the stomach lining and supports a comfortably satisfying digestion. With just about 20 calories per cup and a low glycemic index, it’s a drink that fits beautifully into a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
Orge Noir keeps easily at room temperature, in a dry place away from direct light. After opening, make sure to reseal the sachet carefully after each use — you can also transfer the ground coffee to an airtight jar for optimal storage. Unlike certain delicate superfoods, roasted barley coffee naturally keeps its aromas and nutritional properties over the long term. No refrigeration is needed. For the best taste quality, we recommend consuming the product within 12 months of opening.
